1 John 1:7,
“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship
with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all
sin.”
Does this mean the Christian
doesn’t need to pray for forgiveness? Someone may say – “God already knows my
heart and needs, why do I need to pray. And forgiveness, He has already
forgiven me and he cleanses my sins 24 hours a day anyway, why should I pray
for forgiveness?”
My question to this immature attitude
toward God is – “What about your thankfulness for the incredible gift of
forgiveness?” I think people even in the church forget, Jesus didn’t have to
die on the cross for sinful man, He doesn’t need us, even you and me. But He
desires us, and left us to make our decision by our free will to obey or
disobey the Gospel. He made a conscious decision to submit to Gods will on that
terrible cross because he loved us and for no other reason, this should be a
reason to continue praying and thanking Him for His sacrifice.
You may have a strong or a
weak prayer life, but remember, the Spirit intercedes to help us pray (Romans 8:26-27) even when we know not what to pray for. In fact, the Spirit makes our
feeble prayers perfect before the Father as we struggle voicing them. See our
lesson on Holy Spirit Intercession for more on prayer.
Isn’t it wonderful to know that
you Christian, have two advocates to the Father? Them being Jesus, and the
Spirit when we pray!
Here is a video lesson that
addresses the question, “Should I Pray
for Forgiveness?"
